This course will introduce students to the health care system in Ecuador, and provide an opportunity to experience a variety of health care settings, as well as the Ministry of Health, schools, indigenous communities, and markets. To better understand and appreciate Ecuadorian culture and its impact on health beliefs and practices, students will take Spanish language classes at the Universidad de Las Américas (UDLA) in Quito. These will be small group classes and students will be placed at their appropriate level. There are no prerequisites. To further strengthen Spanish language skills and cultural immersion, students will stay with host families while in Quito. Students will also visit rural indigenous communities.
